SQL Server AlwaysOn is the new integrated, flexible, cost-efficient high availability and disaster recovery solution that provides redundancy within a datacenter and across datacenters and enables fast application failover providing maximum availability and data protection for your mission critical applications.

AlwaysOn provides flexibility in configuration and enables reuse of existing hardware investments including shared storage.

AlwaysOn Availability Groups

AlwaysOn Availability Groups is a new feature that greatly enhances the capabilities of Database Mirroring and ensures availability of application databases and provides zero data loss protection. Availability Groups provides an integrated set of options including automatic and manual failover of a group of databases, support for up to four secondaries and two synchronous secondaries, fast application failover and automatic page repair.

AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances

AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances enhances the SQL Server Failover Clustering feature and supports multi-site clustering across subnet which enables cross-datacenter failovers of SQL Server instances. Fast and predictable instance failover is another key benefit which enables fast application recovery.

Aug 9th Meeting – Shawn Jackson – Tips and Tricks for Dimensional Modeling

August 6, 2012 in Meetings

When: Thursday, Aug 9th
Pizza at 5:30 PM
Meeting at 6:00 PM

Where: New Horizons
4775 American Way
Memphis, TN, 38118

Join us on Thursday, Aug 9th, as Shawn Jackson shows us a few tips and tricks about dimensional modeling.

As usual, refreshments will be served around 5:30 PM and the meeting will start at 6 PM.

Abstract:

Dimensional modeling is a set of techniques and concepts used in data warehouse design. It is intended to support end-user queries and is oriented around understandability and performance. Dimensional modeling always uses the concepts of facts (measures) and dimensions (context). Facts are typically (but not always) numerical values that can be aggregated and dimensions are groups of hierarchies and descriptors that define the facts. For example, sales amount is a fact; timestamp, product, register#, store#, etc. are elements of dimensions. Dimensional models are built by business process area, e.g. store sales, inventory, claims, etc.

We will cover the basics of dimensional modeling such as defining dimensions and facts, identifying the grain and star schema versus snowflake schema. We will also cover tips and tricks for dealing with more advanced topics such as roleplaying dimensions, fact-less fact tables and the different modeling techniques for slowly changing dimensions.

Bio:

Shawn Jackson has 16 years of experience working as an application developer for Morgan Keegan (now Raymond James) including 12 years of SQL Server experience. In 2007 he began working on Morgan Keegan’s BI initiative and became Microsoft Certified in SQL Server BI. Shawn has since designed, built and implemented their data warehouse. Shawn holds a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Memphis.
