Some new significant announcements have come out in the recent weeks related to SQL Server and the BI stack.

  2. Data Explorer Preview (with Power View and PowerPivot)
  3. Hortonworks Data Platform for Windows
  4. Parallel Data Warehouse for SQL Server 2012

Come see and hear more regarding new developments in this area. This discussion will be mostly interactive and totally off script – so come help learn with the instructor about how to take your SQL Server environment to the next level.

Bio:

Technology consultant with over 20 years experience in applying innovative solutions to business needs. Key focus areas are Business Intelligence, Enterprise Performance Management and Data Strategy. Work heavily in promoting technology in the Southeast through involvement with regional user groups (.NET, PASS) and industry-recognized organizations (TDWI, DAMA).

Abstract:

With the recent launch announcement SQL Server 2012, Microsoft has focused on providing enterprise-ready Business Intelligence platform to support all of an organizations data needs. A new edition of SQL Server – the BI Edition – focuses entirely upon delivering these solutions with the optimal assembly of assets necessary for deployments.

In his presentation, Dan will talk to us about:

  • Understanding more about the components included in SQL Server 2012 BI Edition and comparisons between editions
  • Identifying highlights of major changes since 2008 R2
  • Seeing BI in action with Management Studio, Visual Studio, Reporting Services, Analysis Services and PowerPivot/PowerView
  • Capturing necessary resources to get started with SQL Server 2012

SQL Server 2012 (formally code named Denali) has introduced the new Business Intelligence Semantic Model (BISM) supported by PowerView.

Power View is an interactive data exploration, visualization, and presentation experience that replaces Report Builder 1.0.  It allows for adhoc report creation based on Excel 2010 PowerPivot or the new Sql Server 2012 Analysis Services  (SSAS) tabular models.  PowerView is a browser-based Silverlight application launched from SharePoint Server 2010 that enables users to present and share insights with others in their organization through interactive presentations. It is an extension of Sql Sever 2012 Reporting Services.

We will be introduced to the setup, and potential use of PowerView.

Bio:

Charles B. Watkins, Sr. has experience in working with business entities public, private and nonprofit.  He has be the primary instructor for Sql Server at New Horizons for the past 13 years and has been an employee of New Horizons Computer Learning Center of Memphis for a total of 16 years.  He is certified in  Sql Server 2000, 2005, 2008 – Windows 2000, 2003, 2008 – Sharepoint 2010 – Windows Vitalization – and Lotus Notes (MCP, MCT, MCSA, MCSE, MCTS, MCITP, CLI, CLP).

He loves anything dealing with computers and the new technology that is surrounding Windows, Sql and Sharepoint.

Abstract:
This month, Douglas Johnston introduces the new version of SQL Server, codename Denali.  From T-SQL additions to the new Integration Services designer, from Master Data Services to the new Visual Studio project types, he will walk through a real-world example of each.  As Douglas is also currently implementing all of these for a client, he will also demonstrate the pitfalls and bugs of the pre-release software.  If you are considering upgrading to SQL Server 2012, this session will give you great information on what the benefits and the risks are.

Bio:
Douglas Johnston is a Group Manager in the Business Intelligence & Collaboration Service Line of Avanade. With 10 years of experience with SQL Server and business intelligence tools, in industries as diverse as healthcare, financial services, defense and energy utilities, he has become one of the leading contributors to the Avanade BI community. He advises on, and develops projects with, aspects of database development, performance tuning, architecture, warehouse design and management, high availability, ETL and reporting systems. He is also a founding member of the peer-nominated Avanade Expert Network and holds several Microsoft certifications.

Before becoming a database ninja, Douglas developed with VB6, Perl, Oracle, Business Objects and J2EE, as well as some other really terrible technologies. He has particularly desiccated sense of humor to go with the British accent, owns a kilt, and likes monkeys.

Abstract:

If everything works out as we hope, our own Dan Evans will lead a session covering Section III about SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). Come learn the fundamentals of SSAS concepts and how to apply SSAS to your BI/DW environment. Understand how to build and deploy a cube, edit dimensions and measures and play around with some MultiDimensional eXpressions (MDX).

If Dan is not able to join us, I will continue from our last session and go over examples of how you might go about loading dimension or fact tables using SSIS.

After working for 14 years as an electrical engineer, Alvin Ramard returned to school to pursue a career in Information
Technology.  Alvin has almost 12 years of experience working mainly with SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008, and 2008R2, with
strong focus on ETL and BI.  Alvin also has a strong desire to learn new SQL Server technologies and he is enjoys sharing this information with other SQL Server enthusiasts.

Alvin Ramard is a co-founder and a Vice-President of the Memphis PASS Chapter.
